Brr! Suddenly got cold!
My pipe fix needs retooling. I'm not thrilled, but also not surprised. I need to start putting aside cash every week to get it repaired properly, but for now I'll buy more plumber's putty.
In other news, I have to do all of my laundry - boo! - and my new glasses are working nicely now that I'm used to them. I'm in the stage of owning glasses where I vow I'll be super careful not to let gunk build up between the frames and the lenses. We'll see how long that lasts! Wish me luck!

just the rudiments

The Wheelhouse - Week 15- 2
Writers have until Thursday to get their entries in! therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1209672.html
But that also means they have until then to get in their accusations on who the Killer(s) is/are! I just had to go back and reread the post where I announced the Killers, because there was a detail I was remembering but It sounded like something I DIDN'T end up implementing. After checking, I was right. It's not a "real" thing... but it might have been fun.
The idea was that the Killers would keep up their roles until the Top 5. Which is still the case. The "extra that got dropped" is that any Killers who made it undetected to the Top 5 automatically won the game! :D Which would have put a LOT more pressure on the rest of you to find them!! As is, it's just that once you get to the Top 5, or you expose all of them, they stop being Killers and resume their normal roles in the game, bleeding back in, and retired from their murderous ways!!

Well, I like them well enough
Except I think that my pupil distance was 56 instead of 55, and also the bridge seems a bit flimsy. That, I don't like, but it may be my amorphous anxiety talking.
In other news, Moonpie has completely scratched and licked up her nipples and now they're bleeding and infected, and apparently the vet prefers to do a blood test at this age, but as the blood test is $400 we declined. (E asked if I thought they judged us for that, lol, sweetie, I always think everybody judges me for everything, but that's not a rational mindset, so no, upon reflection I don't think that. We're hardly the only family to make petcare decisions based on affordability, and even if they do judge us, great, they can pay for this bloodwork themselves.) Also, NYC now mandates a new vaccine for cats and dogs. They can mandate what they like, but they can't make people follow that law. However, after the vet explained that this disease spreads pretty easily and now is spreading to humans, in whom it can cause kidney and/or liver failure, I decided, reluctantly, to make vaxxing the cats a priority. Which means full vet appointments for each one and new rabies shots as well. It's not going to be a quick process, is what I'm saying. (And we still need to replace those water heaters before they break!)

The Wheelhouse - Week 15
I've been asked this question a couple times, which makes me think I wasn't spelling it out clearly enough:
- The contestants are writing ONE entry. But they are using the two entries as their creative springboard!
***
Also, during Week 14 there was an empty vial found in the hallway. For those keeping score.
***
What do you have planned for this weekend?

Well, I've picked out a new set of frames
It was a penny more than the old ones, so there's that. (But I paid for super expedited shipping, so actually it's like $40 more.)
They're green. I'm not so sure about this, but there will be NO MORE TAKE-BACKS. I triple checked that they weren't safety glasses with the things on the side, which would've been great if I was in a field where I needed those but, as it is, was unwearable, and they're the exact same measurement as my old glasses, I checked that as well.

Prompt - Week 15
We have a twist - finding your opponent. People have been impatiently waiting for the prompt to be posted, expecting me to spin the Wheel. But that's not the case this time. This time the prompt was built into the structure of the twist. I just needed to verify with the Wheel that my interpretation of how this would work is how it actually does.... for the record, I was correct!
***
So, what is your prompt? Take a look at your opponent's TWO entries from last week: therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1208099.html
You are going to be using those are springboards for YOUR entry this week. It's basically just another version of "reinterpret an entry from a competitor" deal, but with two entries that you need to shape into something of your own!!
This will either be a lot of fun or a complete trainwreck! I'm here for it either way!!!
The deadline to link your entry to this thread is Thursday, November 13th at 7pm ET
Have fun!!

I used the election to read In Other Lands
I liked it, but that was because I liked laughing at how stupidly oblivious the protagonist was to his not-rival's extraordinarily obvious crush on him. And also because I like most things I read.
But then, here I was, 20 minutes from the finish line, our two dudes are about to finally resolve all their deep-seated personal issues that have kept them apart - and my coworkers start a loud conversation right next to me and they will not shut up. I did, eventually, have to ask them to please stop for half an hour so I could finish my book.

Twist Reveal - Week 15
*spins the wheel* There is a twist!!
*spins the wheel to see which twist it is going to be*
OH. Nice.
Head to head matches! You can directly challenge someone to a one on one dual here. If you opt not to, one will be chosen for you by the Wheel!
I'll post your prompt after you make your selections.

I am so tired
I have a mandatory staff meeting in an hour and I may call out on the grounds that I am so tired.
(I also have a headache, but if I call out on the grounds that omg my head is killing me my manager will tell me to go to the doctor. It's not an illness, it's a generational curse, plus I worked 16 hours on approximate 0 hours of sleep yesterday.)
On the other hand, I want to seem responsible. But... I am really groggy and tired and I have a headache.

Mamdami won
I haven't had a chance to look at any other election results yet, but that's cheering. I do think he's vastly overpromised and will regret it - among other things, free buses requires first wresting the MTA back from Albany, and that's not the job of a single term - but it's not like I liked any of the other candidates.
Especially Cuomo, for many reasons, but most especially because you just can't trust somebody who thinks the best career move after governor is mayor.

The Wheelhouse - Week 14 - 2
I'll be spinning the wheel tomorrow for the new twist and prompt.
Honestly, I'm considering pushing the plunger down to proceed to end game from here. That might just be where my own head is at right now, and how busy I am. The Wheel may just end it for me soon anyway, we don't have a lot of contestants left!
Just wanted to make SURE people know that although there is a possibility of people coming back into the game, that the Wheel could just never land there again, or I could push that plunger and then no one comes back. So please make sure to be saying your goodbyes when you have the chance. therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1209016.html therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1208631.html
I know there's a lot going on, but a big part of being a community is coming together to acknowledge each other. I hope that continues.
Speaking of - make sure you are reading and commenting on the entries for this week: therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1209016.html The sacrifices negated the need for a poll. (and honestly, I need to buy some more time for my paid account anyway. :D So it was good timing!)
***
I spent the last couple days in Miami hanging out with an Idoler! (dreamsreflected) from (checks spreadsheet) Seasons 9, 10 and mini seasons A, B and Friends and Rivals! It's always a lot of fun to meet people who have been impacted by their time in Idol. If you're going to be anywhere near me - or if I'm coming to somewhere around you, let's meet up! Or send me an email and just check in. She reminded me that I've been more and more distant as the years go by. It started as a defense against people who thought I was playing favorites (I wasn't) but then it became the standard, arms-length relationships. Which is a shame. Idol started out as something to entertain myself, and my friends. If you are here, you are my friends. :)
*rereads that last sentence* And no, I'm not drunk. :D
How are YOU doing?

Argh!
I took over Jenn's game of Cult of the Lamb - which may have been a mistake, because her angry followers whom she starved now pop out of chests and try to kill me - and I defeated the big boss and converted him into a follower. And then I resurrected somebody, and literally the second I stepped outside my temple to go to the healing hut to heal the resurrected follower, the resurrectee ate him. So now I have to do a new resurrection!

Results - Week 14
I spun the wheel to see how many people would be eliminated this week. It came up as 1.
Which, in this context, it's 1 from each poll. So we lose 2.
But as I was putting together the polls I noticed there were 2 sacrifices!
muchtooarrogant and
bleodswean
Which would mean those 2 are eliminated.
But I want to make sure people are reading and commenting. So I'm going to give you a couple days to read and comment on these awesome entries before we move forward! https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1208099.html

Week 14 - The Accusation
The numbers are quickly dwindling and the suspects are becoming fewer. We are gathered here today to name names and to accuse one of you assembled here today of being a Killer!
II just checked the list to make sure this was correct, but it looks like the ONLY vote for this person cast for this entire season was last week. Which is pretty remarkable.
Collectively, the residents of Idol Manor accuse
legalpad819 of being a Killer!!!
There is no sound. No laughter. No light. The amulet in her hand does not glow to release the evil inside. That was used to save her back in Week 12!!
Instead, she just drops to the ground, eliminated from the competition. She lived as a Killer. She died as a Killer.

She drinks it, and immediately starts feeling her energy being restored!

The group gives the antidote to l0lita. She drinks it, and immediately starts feeling better!!
A life has been saved!

Today is a great day for the heroes! A life saved and a Killer exposed and eliminated from the game!

Gone
Idol Wheel of Chaos | Week 14, Story 2 | 1834 words
Ambuscade
x-x-x-x-x
It's been four months since Jenny disappeared.
I honestly thought she'd be back by now. She had a job waiting for her, and she was never the flaky type. But she went to the Allegheny Horror Con in June, and apart from Instagram updates the first two days, no one had heard from her since.
Jenny and I weren't super-close, but if I'd been a better friend, I'd have gone looking for her months ago. Now, at least, I was able to take some vacation time to fly to Pennsylvania. I hoped I would find some answers.
I got in late Friday night, and drove to the same Airbnb where Jenny had stayed. Jenny had gushed over its quaintness in her posts, but it didn't look terribly interesting in the dark. The inside was old-school gothic, with spooky candelabras and a color scheme built on deep red and black. I would have called it murky— we were in the LED age, but the lighting was all low-watt incandescents.
Maybe it just fit better with Jenny's Addams Family aesthetic than my mid-century modernism.
It was a medium-sized three-bedroom house, and yet there was an actual parlor filled with wingback chairs, a fireplace, and dusty portraits. Different eras, different priorities, I supposed. The bathroom had a claw foot tub with a shower head and a curtain. The main bedroom had scrollwork furniture and an honest-to-god four-poster bed.
I put down my suitcase and took in my surroundings. Gloomy, I thought, and kind of creepy. But for Jenny, it was probably perfect.
Jenny had been a horror fan for as long as I could remember. She read it, watched it, and breathed it, in perpetual contrast to her sunny personality. She'd been looking forward to Horror Fest since buying her ticket in February, thrilled with the chance to meet some of her favorite authors. Beneath her wholesome blond exterior beat the heart of a woman who hoped to someday write like Catriona Ward.
Was Catriona there at the conference, I wondered. Did you get a chance to speak to her? I knew Jenny had gone to a couple of movie panels and met a lot of other fans, but most of the writers' events were on the last day and she'd stopped posting by then.( Read more... )
