Congratulations to [livejournal.com profile] ravengirl and [livejournal.com profile] annamaryse who both used the above as a title to their posts, in back to back entries on my friendslist. I thought I was seeing double! I mean, what are the odds? But that started me thinking about food generally and of course the media's newest darling [livejournal.com profile] onceupon, who I got to interview on my little [livejournal.com profile] talk_show almost exactly two years ago, or a year and a half before shows like ABC's Nightline and Dr. Phil picked her up! Yes! I'm pleased to say Marianne is going to be on Dr. Phil during May Sweeps for a two part episode, so stay tuned, I'll keep you posted about exact dates when that info is available! (And to think she was so shy when I first met her in Orlando, all those years ago!)

Food is an issue. We all need to eat, right? And what are we eating? That Oscar Nominated Documentary, "Food, Inc." really makes me want to just move to a few acres, set up a garden and raise/grow and eat my own food. I mean, no joke; this is horrific. Food is a commodity, and corporations controlling it mean that they care more about the profits than the health and well being of those that purchase it.

And that gets into the issue of universal health care, because this is a garbage in/garbage out situation. If the food we eat isn't so good, we aren't going to feel so good, and we'll get sick and need to be treated, possibly hospitalized if it's really bad.

Food is a drug. And really that's the other part of it. Food provides vitamins, nutrients, etc. that the body needs, but it's also used to make us psychologically feel better. We have it as a treat, or we use it as a motivation, or whatever. So it's has these multi-purpose uses that make it difficult to define.

And then there's the cost. Our parents teach us not to "waste" food, so when they buy it, they want us to eat everything we get because throwing away food is a negative.

There's a lot on this plate for certain, and sorting it all out is as individual as everyone who deals with this is. There is no one brilliant answer for any of these issues but we all need to decide what matters to us and follow the path we feel right about. The problem is that we are constantly being criticized by other people, or perhaps worse, by ourselves, and that creates a whole series of other issues.

I think the basics of it are that corporations controlling our food supply just isn't a healthy thing for individuals. They do not have the health and well-being of their patrons in mind, and are only out to make the biggest profits they can, which means that they will cut corners, change recipes, cheapen ingredients and switch supplies whenever possible to widen that profit margin. They can't be trusted.

But the other element is we need to care about each other, and that doesn't mean being overtly critical if someone doesn't have the body type we think is best. Caring means understanding, and this process is going to take a long time to complete. But, with people like [livejournal.com profile] onceupon, we're starting to make strides.

And there's a chunk lumped into the food blogger category. I believe I did an entry on that recently. I was inspired by a recent episode of Anthony Bourdain: No Reservation. One of my favorite shows!

For me, personally, I treat food as fuel. If I need energy, I'm not going to fuel myself with something that will weigh me down or leave me bloated. However, I will spring for a treat every now and then.

Agree with this entry. Adding my .02 ...

#1 You are what you eat. If you eat junk, you're going to feel like (perhaps I'd even use the word "be") junk, because you're made of junk. In this virtual, technological age, I think we've lost touch with how incredibly important food is.

#2 Your body knows PRECISELY what it needs, and it will inform you about this through cravings (not to be confused with addictions).

#3 Let your food be your medicine. Potatoes not prozac here, folks. Food, and HERBS, have AMAZING wellness-supporting qualities. I promise doing just a little bit of research will blow you away on the herb front.

#4 The rare treat made of good ingredients (homemade chocolate cake created from organic ingredients versus twinkies) is 100% fine. That said, exercise is also essential for well-being.

#5 F%ck Western medicine. If you're worth more dead, they'll kill you. Go the natural route, unless it's absolutely essential that you go to a hospital. Then, go in with your head about you, and grimace and bear it.

PS-I've seen Food INC also, and also liked it.
