In the midst of all the other stuff happening, we have an Olympics going on! It's the first of three consecutive Olympics that will be held on the continent of Asia, with the Summer games of 2020 scheduled for Tokyo and the next Winter Games in 2022 to be held in Beijing, the first city to ever host both the Summer and Winter Games.

If there is any good that has come from the Trump presidency, it's that the North and South Koreans are at least behaving in a civil manner toward one another. I don't mean to say that Trump created this, because in a very real sense he did not. But because of his not so veiled threats about a war with North Korea, a war that, if it became nuclear, would have a severe impact on South Korea, they have started talking.

The result was that athletes from both North and South Korea entered the stadium together, a show of solidarity, friendship and trust... all elements that are championed by this event.

Mike Pence showed up and waved at the US Olympians, then hopped a plane back home. That seems rather typical of this administration... come for the photo op, leave before anything happens.

If nothing else, the Olympics serves as a reminder that we do have more in common with each other than we may want to admit. That we can behave appropriately towards people from other countries, even as we are in competition with them. That we may not do things the same way, but determining which way is "better" is a futile exercise designed only to harm.

This is where sports can be an important part of life for all of us, even those that don't care about sports.

We have come to the end of the 30 Day Music Challenge, and again, I'm altering this selection from the original... the challenge for today was supposed to be "Your Favorite Song This Time Last Year." I'm pretty sure that this time last year, songs were not on my mind in the least... except for Mussorgsky's "Night On Bald Mountain", which, I kid you not, really was playing in my head almost continually those first couple of months of 2017.

But now, in the wake of the Grammys and of the positive elements that seem to be on the rise in our society, plus the fact that we haven't, as yet, talked about what's happening now in music during this 30 day meme, all points to reasons why we should examine what's popular today and select a current song for this list!

Music is ever-changing, ever growing, constantly surprising and continually flowing. Even though the sounds of the songs on the current charts bear no resemblance to 1968 or 1988 or even 2008, there is still a thread that connects them together. If you can't find something you like during any era of music, that only means that you just aren't listening.

I have an easy job for this final pick. Or, really it's a difficult one in that there are a number of songs that I really love that are on the charts this week. But I'm making this selection for a few crucial reasons. First, it's a song focused on the concept of what is usually referred to as "Girl Power", taking back the strength in a relationship, rather than giving it all to the guy. That's a great and very timely message.

Second, the tune itself is so strong and unique, it really has an edge that makes it stand out; it is a tune that has that "earworm" quality that a lot of hits are all about. It has a great sound.

Third, the artist is breaking through, becoming a part of the mainstream from her native Great Britain for most of last year. You didn't hear her name during this week's Grammys, but I would be shocked if you wouldn't hear it at least a few times during next year's ceremony!

And finally, just to bring it back to NYC one final time during this Challenge, The performer is going to make her very first appearance as the musical guest on this Week's Saturday Night Live, hosted by Natalie Portman. You'll be able to see her for yourself when the show airs on NBC, Feburary Third, at 11:30 Eastern, 8:30 Pacific!

So, this massive list of songs, which started with something old, is ending with something new. I conclude the 30 Day Music Challenge with Dua Lipa - "New Rules"

Emmys 2014

There is something seriously wrong with the Awards Show format.

I think the concept is still okay - a bunch of celebrities get all dressed up for the event, walk the Red Carpet, talk about their designers and their work, find their seats in some venue with a beautiful set design, and then about 15 to 20% of the nominees win some hardware.

That worked very nicely for the many years from 1949, the year of the first Emmy telecast, to say, the mid 2000s, when social media began to take hold. Okay... maybe it never worked, but people were content to watch it anyhow, because it was different and maybe somewhat exciting.

Today, there are lots of celebrity events... )

Every Saturday morning, one of our local newscasts, NBC Today in New York does something a little bit extra. They give us a special fun trivia game!

Kaitlin Monte is the host of the game within the news program, which basically comes at the end of the hour, typically about forty five minutes into the proceedings. A USO entertainer, Former Miss America contestant (2nd Runner Up in 2011!) and anti-bullying advocate, Kaitlin could be considered the yang to Pat Kiernan's yin as far as NYC news related trivia hosts are concerned.

Now, the thing about this trivia game... )

So, if you watched any of that show, you'll know that I never made it on TV and in fact, never got back to play the game again.

What was going on, I discovered, was the casting department of the game really wanted someone in their 20s to be on the televised portion, which is why the people in Winners' Row were firm. Though I could have made a run if I had a fair chance (and I really did make a run, but only halfway to the totals I needed to qualify), they made sure I didn't have a fair chance... and I know they were purposely not letting me get a second attempt because contestants compared answers in the room after we took the quiz and I certainly could have been put through if they wanted to select me.

That's when I gave up and didn't go back, even though they did invite me to return. I mean, yeah, I could have taken another day off work, gone back to eat more Twinkies and Subway sandwiches (if I never eat another one of either of those, I'm good with that). And hoped they would let me have another go, I figured they would have put me through that second time. I mean, Rishi, the guy I beat, came back, they put HIM through, and he got to be in the chair again! Of course, he lost rather quickly that time, and didn't get back on the prime time telecast, but at least he got the second chance.

Though I might have gotten to play on the televised part of the game had I either played against people who were also there for 24 hours, or if I had at least gotten a power nap, I obviously wasn't going to beat the two top players for the big prize. Both Andrew and Brandon are Trivia Savants, and even when they don't know the answer, manage to guess fairly accurately. Their abilities are truly staggering and awe-inspiring.

It was fun to play and compete, though and I got some real insights about what goes on behind the scenes at a big money prime time game show. That info is probably more useful to me than the cash they might have paid.

I'm back in the contestant waiting room, so if you want to look in on me (occasionally, since they split the feeds up) go to:

and you might see me. I'm in a red shirt.

What I didn't know at the time was that even though we were playing in this non-descript set up area, I was actually playing the game! I was in the money chair, only without all the lights and the halo that flashes your total continuously. I had beaten a member of Winner's Row... Rishi. Although had I beaten him during the "Winner's Defense" segment of the game, I would have inherited all of his money.

Here, I just got to take his seat and start earning 10 dollars a second, beginning at 0.

So, after I was selected to move on in the competition, my little group of fellow qualifiers were escorted to the Area 8. We went outside and down the block to a parking lot with a couple of tents and lots of couches and blankets.

Before we could sit down and fall asleep, there were more forms to fill out, including psychiatric info... Yes, there are doctors on duty and they made it clear that we could utilize their help and that they would be there for us if we needed some mental moments, but it also meant that we would likely not continue in the game.

Still hadn't had any sleep and every time I was on the verge of dozing, there was some other thing to do... sign this here, meet this doctor who will take your temperature and blood pressure, get photographed again. Get interviewed, again.

These aren't complaints! )

When we got into the building, which they refer to as the "MSQ Campus," it was like getting on an airline... metal detectors, security patdowns and inspections. When it was clear we had no Weapons of Mass Destruction, and our documents were all verified, we got to go to a little holding pen, where we waited for our turn to play to the cameras and explain a bit about ourselves. But you have to keep in mind, the game was actually already underway, with the contestants sequestered (oh that word) in their area, the top winners safely hidden in another area and the massive "hourglass" set on the rooftop of the building.

Those people who have been following this journal for the long haul, and I know there are a few people that are still here now that were then, know that exactly ten years ago this month, I appeared on a game show, called "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire." It was a fun experience and the profit I made from it helped me get acquainted with some more El Jay people along the way. If you want to have a look at those moments, you'll find them listed under "wwtbam" on my tags.

And here we are, September 2013 and here I am, trying to play another trivia (that's three roads in Italian) game!

It's called "The Million Second Quiz," hosted by Television's omnipresent Ryan Seacrest.

time is money... )
