Our New Reality - Becoming Never Stops
Jun. 17th, 2010 04:12 amI'm sure you've heard the statement. It's been said to us by everyone from Oprah to Kelly Ripa. The phrase is just this side of cliché, but it still has some buzz to it, so it's not burned out yet. What I'm talking about are the four words that seem so simple to say, but this simple sentence has the appearance of being increasingly more difficult to accomplish:
DO WHAT YOU LOVE.
In a world that is now starting to make different demands from all of us, I'm here to announce that this is no longer a suggestion, a pipe dream, a lovely thought or a random concept. No. In Our New Reality, Doing What You Love is a SURVIVAL SKILL.
Inherently, we know and understand why that is. If we do what we love, we are going to be engaged and more interested in our work and that will allow us to do better, more quality work, which will make our roles more valuable as we do it. Just think about the wave of new college graduates that just picked up their diplomas. What's going to set you apart from them, or them apart from the rest of their class?
When times are difficult, people immediately start tensing up and moving away from their passions. But why is that? Is it because they think they have to "play it safe" and try to grab whatever job is available? Well, it's understandable that everyone needs an income, so survival jobs are important, but you have to treat what you love as a part of your job set. You have to make room for it somehow. If it means getting an hour less sleep a night, set the alarm and wake up for it. If it means less time for elements that used to define you, make the sacrifice.
The world needs everyone to be their best RIGHT NOW. So there's no point in continuing to languish in a job that doesn't utilize your skills, and doesn't motivate and inspire you to do better. You know this, either in the back of your mind or the front of your brain, you are already fully cognizant of everything I'm saying. It's just that fear tends to block. Fear is the great censor, there to challenge you to remain right where you are. What if it doesn't work? What if I fail? What if I don't earn enough money? and on and on.
There are reasons after reasons why you shouldn't do what you love. But there's one single reason why you should. And I know you know it. It's YOU. You want to do what you love. Your soul, your being, every molecule in your body is pointing, like a compass point to Magnetic North right at it... and if you haven't found exactly what you love yet, buried deep down in there is the feeling of exploration, to seek, to discover and uncover just what it is you're on the planet to do!
This is more than important, and if you look at all of the major events going on in the world, you can start to see just what it means. If everyone is doing what they love, just picture how efficient, how effective, how successful, how well-run (and how not well-oiled) this world would be!
Ultimately, this should lead to a complete revamp of the school system, where the basics are taught to all students, but we help them discover just what they enjoy the most, what special skills they may have to utilize and discover just where they would like to go. But that's another concept for another post.
Right now, we have to get you moving. The clock is running, but it's not too late. And that's the best part: it's never too late to start doing what you love. But you have to have the courage to try, and the bravery to block out the negatives that will surely be flung your way when you start taking those steps away from your current life into the one that will lead you to what you love.
So, The first step is the easy part, believe it or not. And the first step is just deciding to find out what it is that you love. If you decide you want to find out, then the exploration begins, and that may take weeks, months or years. There's no set time on how long it'll take you to find what you love. But when you do, you have to take it, grab it, embrace it tightly! This means something!
Step one. Let's just do that. Agree with me that you'll look for the something that you love.
Your life depends on it.
