When [livejournal.com profile] gruyere saw the icon with my picture in it, he suggested that he thought I looked like...

"Weird" Al Yankovic

...which is amusing. It certainly wasn't the first time I've heard that comparison, but it reminded me of some of the stories of people who have either told me or reacted like I resembled someone else.

1) I was invited to a Penthouse Magazine "Pet Event," where one of the models, a performer named Amy Lynn was one of the hosts. Amy had been a frequent visitor to and a self-proclaimed fan of radio "Shock Jock"

Howard Stern

Amy and Howard had been on-air flirting for years. Some people thought that it was all just an act, Howard included, and that Amy was only being nice to him to get some publicity from his show.

Anyway, I walked into the place. Amy turned to me as I entered... and her eyes lit up and she smiled broadly at me for a moment from across the room... then, she realized I WASN'T Howard, turned away and went about her business. So, I'm certain that Amy really did have a thing for the guy.

2) I was sitting in the lobby of a trendy New York Hotel. A concierge was supposed to meet me to discuss some space options. There was a commotion behind me as I sat on the sofa. When I turned, a couple of people were being held back by a staff employee.

The people thought (from behind) that I was

Slash

of GNR fame. I only know this because the staff member thought I was Slash, too! (What I didn't know was that Slash was staying at the hotel at the time, so, perhaps this was a logical assumption.)

3) I went to the movie premiere of "200 Cigarettes" in LA. Kate Hudson was one of the people in the large ensemble cast, and her mom Goldie Hawn was in attendance. For a film that featured so many of my favorite actors, it completely sucked, but oh, well. The party and concert by Blondie afterwards were great.

Before the film, Melissa Joan Hart kept turning around to stare at me from her seat. She even came over to get a not-so-subtle closer look at me. I wanted to ask her what she was staring at, but I didn't.

Afterwards, I wandered around and I noticed that Goldie herself was looking at me. She was surrounded by people who were talking with her, then, she saw me, gave me one of her trademark smiles, walked away from those people and came directly towards me! I almost looked over my shoulder to see who she was REALLY going to talk to... but it was me! She said, "Hi!" We shook hands, I congratulated her... (no, I didn't say "nice daughter..." though I could have!) and that was about the extent of it.

Later, I found out that about that time, Kate was dating

Lenny Kravitz

in the darkened areas of the screening theater, could this have been Melissa and Goldie's mistake?

4)I was wandering around a record store and a security guard was staring at me, intently. I thought he suspected me of shoplifting, since he seemed to be stalking, so I was getting annoyed. Moments later, he came right over to me. He nervously asked...

"Excuse me, but... are you... him?"

The guard points up at a poster of

Kenny G.

I thought he was making a bad joke, but I could see in his eyes he was being sincere. HE REALLY WANTED TO KNOW IF I WAS KENNY G.!!! I smiled, said yes and walked out with a Kenny G. box set. Okay. I didn't, but I probably could have.

It's a wacky world out there.

It's the hair. If you shaved it all off, you'd live a life of peace, heh.

Also, I agree about 200 Cigarettes. I had really high hopes for it after seeing all the people who were going to be in it, but the movie just seemed an incessant whine-fest if I remember correctly (I've been trying to block it, I think).

I wrote song parodies in high school. I just had no clue about what to do with them! Of course, I didn't have any musical talent, and no car that could drive me to Dr. Demento's radio studio...

Where you are makes a difference. Maybe, had it gone differently, Al might have gotten stopped and told he looked like you or me!

When you don't like the way you look comparisons can be difficult to hear. When someone starts a conversation with you look like....I run the other way, screaming.

I think people don't mean any harm, and frequently are paying a compliment. But, sure. You want to be yourself... not somebody else!

When I first saw your picture, you were wearing sunglasses, and I thought you looked like Howard. Once I met you, you were more Lenny than anything. But, you are unique. You look like Dean!

Yeah! I am me (last time I checked)! Unfortunately, people still want to see me as something they know. Maybe that's the issue. People just are using celebrities as a method of relating!

When I think about it THAT way, I think to myself: what a pitiful and superficial society we live in.

...

Have a nice day! :o)
